  1. adrenal gland, or suprarenal gland
  2. A gland situated on top of the kidney. The
  3. adrenals are soft and yellow, and consist of
  4. two parts: the cortex and medulla. The cortex
  5. (outer part) secretes various steroid
  6. hormones, controls salt and water metabolism,
  7. and regulates the use of carbohydrates,
  8. proteins, and fats. The medulla (inner part)
  9. secretes the hormones adrenaline and
  10. noradrenaline which constrict the blood
  11. vessels of the belly and skin so that more
  12. blood is available for the heart, lungs, and
  13. voluntary muscles, an emergency preparation
  14. for the stress reaction `fight or flight'.
